Hikaru Nakamura<\/strong> (born December 9, 1987) is an Japanese-American chess grandmaster. In 2003, at the age of 15 years and 79 days, Nakamura become the youngest American to earn the grandmaster title, breaking the record of Bobby Fischer by three months.<\/p>\n

He began playing chess prior to the age of five and was coached by his Sri Lankan stepfather, FIDE Master and chess author Sunil Weeramantry. Nakamura’s long-time second is Kris Littlejohn, a master-level player who works with chess engines to prepare lines for Nakamura to play. Nakamura has said about his second Little that \u201dhe would have become a grandmaster if he had began playing chess earlier and more seriously. Perhaps not a strong grandmaster, but a grandmaster neverthless\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nakamura\u2019s peak Elo rating was 2816 in October 2015. At the moment his Elo rating is 2787.<\/p>\n

Nakamura won the U.S. Chess Championship for the first time in 2005, for the second time in 2009 and for the third time in 2012. Nakamura joined the world top ten as of January 1, 2011. Nakamura\u00b4s greatest success thus far was the win of Tata Steel Masters tournament in Wijk aan Zee in 2011. Nakamura finished the tournament with 9\/13 (+5) and a tournament performance rating of 2879. The 13th Chess World Champion Garry Kasparov called Nakamura\u00b4s victory the best by an American in more than 100 years.<\/p>\n

Nakamura is a frequent online chess player and maintains a Twitter account under the username GMHikaru.<\/p>\n
