It has very simple rules, but despite that, it is very complex. The game is played on a board with a 19×19 grid of lines. The playing pieces are called ”stones”. One player uses the white stones and the other, black. Beginners often play on a smaller 9×9 or 13×13 boards. The aim of the game is to capture territory. The players take turns placing the stones on the vacant intersections (”points”) of a board. The player with a greater territory at the end of the game wins the game.

Currently, there are estimated to be well over 40 million Go players worldwide.
